'Mean Girls' musical latest news: Stage production of Tina Fey's 'Mean Girls' to premiere in October

After it was previously announced that Tina Fey has plans to adapt her highly-acclaimed teen movie "Mean Girls" into a stage musical, and with years of development and planning to make it happen, a premiere schedule for the upcoming musical has finally been set.

As confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, the stage musical version of "Mean Girls" is scheduled to premiere on Oct. 31, 2017 at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C.

Fey has been working on the musical version of the hit movie with her husband, Jeff Richmond, who is in charge of composing the score, and "Legally Blonde" screenwriter Nell Benjamin, who will be writing the lyrics. According to The New York Times, "Saturday Night Live" producer Lorne Michaels, Broadway veteran Stuart Thompson, and director Casey Nicholaw will be serving as the musical's producers.

A development workshop for the "Mean Girls" musical is scheduled for spring. However, no cast has been announced for the musical so far. And although there are currently no plans for a Broadway debut, the high-profile creative team behind the musical promises a strong possibility of the show jumping to New York if its D.C. run is successful.

"Mean Girls," directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey, was a movie released back in 2004. It centers on the character of Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan), who returns to America after living in Africa for 15 years. Having been homeschooled for most of her life, she is unaware of the American teens' culture and the rules of being a student in high school.

Her awful high school experiences lead her to join the popular clique known as the Plastics in order to secretly engineer the downfall of its leader, Regina George (Rachel McAdams). With her mission complete, she inadvertently establishes herself as the new Queen Bee, only to realize later on that she has become the very thing she sought out to destroy.
