Michael Schumacher Condition Latest News: Experts Uncertain If He Will Recover Completely
Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma, this was confirmed by Dr. Jean-Francois Payen, the physician who treated him in Grenoble, France, after his skiing accident in the Swiss Alps.
Whether or not this means that Schumacher is recovering is not certain as his family has not provided any update about his condition while experts have provided conflicting theories.
Payen said he visited Schumacher recently in his home in Switzerland to check on his recovery. During that visit the doctor noticed that he had made some progress but still had a long way to go before he could fully recover. According to the Telegraph, Payen said life after a serious head injury is "littered with stages of recovery." He added that "like with other patients the timescale for recovery ranges from one to three years."
This positive outlook provided by Payen left many fans of the F 1 racing star hoping that he will eventually make a full recovery.
In the meantime, a friend of Schumacher told the Express that he is "awake for periods and can nod slightly" but that it's too early to say whether he will speak or walk again. He also noted that it is clear that Schumacher will never recover fully physically to the state he was before the accident.
Other experts, including Dr. Gary Hartstein who worked for the F1 previously, have warned that Schumacher coming out of the coma does not mean anything, because it was an artificially induced coma. Hartstein also stated that if he had emerged from the "minimally conscious state" he was in before the coma was induced there would be news that he was learning to walk, or having problems speaking. Since no such news has emerged from Schumacher's family he stated this is Schumacher's "long goodbye."
Meanwhile Schumacher's website has been restarted by his family to allow fans to express their feelings about the F1 driver. In a statement posted on the website, his family said: "We thank you for facing this fight together with Michael and us, and your strength is helping us to support him."
