Michael Schumacher news and updates 2016: Racing legend starts to walk?

Since his 1991 Grand Prix debut, Michael Schumacher still holds several world records to beat in motorsports history. | Official MICHAEL SCHUMACHER Website

Michael Schumacher is one of the monumental living icons in the field of sports with seven F1 world champions to his name. As a public figure, there has always been a constant interest surrounding his career and private life. Following the 2013 devastating skiing accident in the Swiss Alps, the Schumacher family has chosen to keep a tight lid on matters concerning his medical condition.

The last time an official update was released for media consumption was back in June 2014 when the Schumacher family announced his transfer from a hospital to his Geneva estate as his team of doctors try to nurse him back to recovery. As the world tries to get scarce updates about his health status, Australia News Network reported that the racing legend is now able to walk a couple of steps with help of his therapists. If the rumor proves accurate,  it will give fans a good reason to believe that the German sportsman may finally be on a definite path to recovery.

However, the alleged claim that Schumacher can already walk may be contested as there is no way to check the veracity of the update coming from an unnamed source. The F1 champion's manager and long-time friend, Sabine Kehm, spoke against any unverified reports coming from questionable sources. It can be recalled that Kehm urged fans to respect the family's request for privacy given his condition.

Meanwhile, Formula One correspondent Daniel Johnson of The Telegraph recently wrote how and why Schumacher remains the benchmark for the younger generation of F1 superstars. It's been 25 years since the little-known son of the German bricklayer emerged to global prominence in 1991 when started to race for Eddie Jordan as a replacement for Frenchman F1 superstar Bertrand Gachot who was imprisoned for two months after spraying a CS gas at a London taxi driver.

Since his Grand Prix debut in the early '90s, the rest is history. Many years later, he earned seven champions with five consecutive titles from 2000 to 2004. On top of the food chain, the racing champ has strong records to beat. He holds a record of winning 91 races. Schumacher also posted a record for having the most number of wins in season for pole positions, fastest laps, and podium finishes.
