'Mortal Kombat' reboot news, release date: Commercial director Simon McQuoid in talks to helm next 'Mortal Kombat' film
Director Simon McQuoid, who is best known for making commercials, is in talks to helm the upcoming "Mortal Kombat" reboot by New Line Cinema.
The Australian filmmaker is a sought-after director for commercials and has worked on numerous high-profile brands such as Beats by Dre, Range Rover and PlayStation. McQuoid has won several awards, including a GRANDY, a D&AD Pencil, and a Grand Clio, for his commercial work.
The director is expected to put a new spin on the film adaptation of the popular video game franchise about a group of warriors from around the world. They participate in a martial arts tournament on which the fate of Earthrealm rests. Based on the iconic '90s arcade game, "Mortal Kombat" has grown into a franchise consisting of various best-selling games developed by NetherRealm Studios, two feature films, an animated TV series, a live-action TV series and a popular theme song.
While the first "Mortal Kombat" movie, which came out in 1995, is among the top-grossing video game adaptations ever released, its sequel, "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" (1997), didn't do so well. Because of this, New Line shelved its plans for more "Mortal Kombat"-related projects. But Variety indicates that the studio reportedly begun planning a reboot in 2011 when the web series "Mortal Combat: Legacy" debuted.
"Furious 7" director James Wan, who is one of the producers behind the upcoming "Mortal Kombat" reboot, spoke to IGN in August and confirmed that the film is "still cooking a way."
"I love the characters," he told the outlet. "I think they're such colorful characters. It's such an amazing take on, basically, 'Enter the Dragon' [the Bruce Lee movie]," he continued..
"They ended up creating such interesting characters, and I think that is such a cool world to explore," Wan added. "This really mythical, bigger world that lives on another dimension on top of ours. I think that's really fun to play with, and so we'll see," he said.
The "Mortal Kombat" reboot is currently without an official release date.
