'Mr. Robot' season 2 news, spoilers: Showrunner breaks down big S2 reveal; says he plans on directing all S3 episodes
Halfway through its second season, "Mr. Robot" gave a definitive answer to one of the biggest questions fans have been asking about the current season.
In the critically acclaimed techno-drama/thriller's latest episode, it was revealed that Elliot (Rami Malek) is locked up in prison and not, as he had been projecting, in his mother's Jersey home. Everything that had been depicted in the first half of season 2 was an alternate reality Elliot had conjured, a coping mechanism for his actual situation. The "mother" in whose basement he had been living in was actually a female prison guard, the basketball court was the prison rec yard, his gloomy bedroom was a jail cell.
The plot twist, which echoed the one from the show's freshman season, in which Mr. Robot turned out to be a figment of Elliot's imagination, was not unexpected. Throughout season 2's front half, viewers had been speculating that Elliot was either in prison or in a mental hospital.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, "Mr. Robot" creator, showrunner, and director Sam Esmail spoke about what the revelation means for Elliot moving forward and how he feels about fans figuring out the plot twist beforehand.
According to the "Mr. Robot" boss, now that Elliot is no longer battling himself, "that's going to change how he sort of operates in the world."
"Now we'll actually see him get to engage back into the main plotline, but with that new dynamic intact," he added.
As for the viewers who predicted the twist, Esmail said that he thinks it's awesome that viewers get excited enough about the series that they take the time to analyze it.
"And if they figured it out beforehand, I hopefully don't think that takes away from the experience," he added.
Meanwhile, it was recently announced that the show has been renewed for a third season. In a statement, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment's President for Entertainment Networks Chris McCumber called the series one "that has pushed boundaries, captured the cultural zeitgeist, and been honored as one of the best dramas on television."
"Midway through its second season, Mr. Robot continues to break new ground and open up new opportunities for the network," he added.
Speaking with THR, Esmail revealed that he will be directing all the episodes for season 3, as he did for season 2.
New episodes of "Mr. Robot" season 2 air every Wednesday at 10 p.m. EDT on USA Network.
