Pedro Pascal's return as DEA agent Javier Pena in "Narcos" season 3 has been confirmed, but Boyd Holbrook is yet to sign on to the new season.

There are reports that he will no longer reprise his role as Pena's partner, DEA agent and Steve Murphy in "Narcos" season 3 as Pascal's character will work with a new set of agents in taking down the Cali Cartel.

The real life Pena and Murphy were instrumental in the takedown of Medellin Cartel and Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar.

However, they were not involved in the pursuit for the Cali Cartel as they took on other missions. But as fans know by now, the people behind the show give themselves legroom to impact creative changes.

This will be the case with Pena's return in "Narcos" season 3. After all, executive producer Eric Newman still wants to work with Pascal.

"We try to be as bound to what actually happened as we can—within reason, obviously. We do take some liberties for dramatic purposes," Newman told Entertainment Weekly.

"But I'd probably have to look at what Pena's role would be in the Cali, in taking down Cali. I love working with Pedro Pascal, so nothing would make me happier than to be back in business with him in some way," he continued.

With regards to Holbrook's "Narcos" season 3 comeback, the EP was a bit vague about his plans for the character when he was asked about it by The Hollywood Reporter.

"I am really proud of Murphy's story and the evolution. One of the things you have to consider is: Is his story over?" Newman said, playing coy.

With no sign of Murphy's return in "Narcos" season 3, it appears that Pena will be working with the newcomers, DEA agent Chris Feistl (Michael Stahl-David) and Daniel Van Ness (Matt Whelan).

Meanwhile, Andrea Londo will be joining "Narcos" season 3 as Maria, who is described as "a young and beautiful former Colombian beauty queen who is clever and knows how to survive." The "Faking It" star joins Kerry Bishé and Arturo Castro as newcomers of the season.

"Narcos" season 3 will premiere next year on Netflix.
