'New Girl' season 6 episode 2 spoilers: Election episode inspires the lofties to express themselves
Even though aptly themed for its National Voter Registration Day airing last Sept. 27, "New Girl's" election episode was really more about the characters finding their own voice than the politics of the campaign period. The campaign trail merely served as a backdrop for the personal issues that the characters had to face.
It took a drunken balcony speech by Jess (Zooey Deschanel) on the importance of letting one's voice heard for Cece (Hannah Simone) to finally decide on what she wanted to do for herself. She didn't want to go to college after all, because she preferred taking on a job and interacting with the actual world than being cooped up inside a four-walled classroom. Just what kind of job does Cece have in mind, and does her husband Schmidt (Max Greenfield) really support her decision 100%?
Meanwhile, Nick's (Jake Johnson) path to enlightenment came through a much tougher terrain. He first had to discover Winston's (Lamorne Morris) so-called Clinic for Satellite Sexual Intercourse — which was really just a closet with green screen — dress up as an astronaut, and accidentally drop his pants for Winston's girlfriend Aly (Nasim Pedrad) on a misdialed video call before he eventually learned that phone sex was really more about self-expression than anything else. It still remains to be seen just how long he could keep up a long distance relationship with Reagan (Megan Fox).
Additionally, after failing to register five new voters and thus losing a bet with Schmidt, Jess was forced to channel her inner Trump out on the street to get her one vote back, which would have gone to Winston as stated on the bet. Schmidt himself was also able to stand by his decision to sit this year's election out and campaign for his 2020 presidential candidate, Paul Ryan.
Nick and Jess never interacted with each other the entire episode, so the previous revelation that Jess was still in love with Nick saw no progress this week. The upcoming third episode shows not much promise either.
Based on the brief summary on TV Guide, the episode titled, "Single and Sufficient" will feature Schmidt and Cece, Winston and Aly, and Jess and her singles-only group going on a "glamping" (glamorous camping) trip while Nick gets hang up on finishing his novel.
"New Girl" airs Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. EDT on FOX and anytime on the online streaming site, FOX Now.
