'Nintendo Switch' release date, news: Ubisoft managing director weighs in on new console; Stardew Valley to be included in game lineup
Dubbed as the most-anticipated hybrid console to arrive next year, the Nintendo Switch has already received numerous positive reviews from notable personalities in the gaming industry. Ubisoft Managing director Xavier Poix is currently learning the intricate details of the unreleased Switch, and he recently praised the portable console's "interesting" features.
With 18 years of working with Ubisoft, Poix has definitely seen a lot of gaming consoles come and go. Speaking with Polygon, the Ubisoft exec revealed how the hybrid hardware's ability to go mobile sets it apart from its competitors. "The way you can play it on the bus and go home and put it on your TV immediately and come back to your room because somebody else wants to watch TV, this is very interesting," Poix stated.
For the uninitiated, the Switch has been shown as a console with one tablet-sized screen that has two controllers connected on both sides. It can be docked with a television, easily moving gameplay into any HD screen. Additionally, users can pick up the tablet and play anywhere. It is expected that on both formats, the gaming experience will be just the same.
On another note, Eric Barone — the creator of the upcoming farming game "Stardew Valley" — recently announced plans of bringing the game to the Nintendo Switch next year. The indie lifestyle sim was initially supposed to have its Nintendo debut on the Wii U but has since been canceled in favor of the Switch.
"Looking at Wii U and the current gaming landscape, we made the difficult choice to shift our development efforts to creating a version for Nintendo Switch," Barone said. "... I do want to emphasize that I am absolutely committed to seeing Stardew Valley on Nintendo platforms, and I really do appreciate your support and understanding in this," he went on to say.
Aside from "Stardew Valley," Nicalis' "The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+" is also rumored to be in the Nintendo Switch next year.
The Nintendo Switch will be released on March 2017, but a definitive launch date is yet to be announced. More details will be revealed by the company at the Nintendo Switch hands-on event in NYC on January 2017.
