Nintendo Switch release date, specs, update: Features TV dock, two Joy-Con controllers; not backwards compatible
Japan-based electronics and software company Nintendo has finally released the official details of the next-gen console. Previously codenamed NX, the new console is now dubbed the Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo released a video to the public to present to everyone the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and apparently, it did not disappoint. The Nintendo Switch promises a whole new gaming experience anywhere and anytime.
As seen in the video, the upcoming console allows users to either play in the comfort of their own home or bring it along with them wherever they want to go. It comes with a docking station that connects the Switch to the television. But when gamers need to go out, they can simply remove the device from the docking station and it transforms into a portable console.
The video also showed two Joy-Con controllers that are attached to each side of the Switch. Gamers can opt to use it as a single player with the controllers on each hand or they can hand the other controller to another player and have a competitive multiplayer game together. The Joy-Con controllers can be put together through the accessory called Joy-Con Grip to create a single controller and use it like a standard gamepad.
"Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like," said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. "It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries," he added.
Nintendo has not really revealed everything yet including the specs and price details. Many are even wondering if the console is going to have a touch screen display since the video did not show anyone touching it. But in terms of backwards compatibility, IGN reported that a Nintendo representative revealed that the Nintendo Switch cannot play Wii U or 3DS games.
More details will be unveiled soon though so fans will have to stay tuned. The Nintendo Switch is slated to be released sometime in March 2017.
