'No Man's Sky' news: New 'Foundation' update announced; Lead designer responds to negative feedback from gamers
As Hello Games promised, a massive and free update for "No Man's Sky" has been recently released.
Known as the "Foundation Update," the patch (1.1) includes the initial parts of the game's base-building. In a post on Hello Games' website, the developer explained that it serves as a "foundation for things to come" and that this update is just a first of "many" free patches for the game.
In the base-building feature, players are able to create an outpost through "modular structures and decorations." These items can be crafted by using the resources players find while exploring the game's vast world. As for visual improvements, the update adds motion blur in order to "accentuate the feeling of speed, particularly when in-flight. Players have the option to turn it on or off from the Options menu. To remove "jagged edges" from the picture, an optional Temporal Anti-Aliasing feature has been included as well.
Three new game modes with different rulesets are also available from the update: Normal, Creative and Survival. Normal mode is the original exploration experience with no time limit, Creative mode enables exploration without limits and the construction of a massive base, while Survival mode is dubbed as the game-changer since it creates a more challenging endurance playing experience.
On another note, many fans have noticed that Sean Murray—the notoriously quiet "No Man's Sky" lead designer—has broken his silence on social media to promote the patch. "If you could have lived our lives over the last months, you'd know how meaningful this is. Here's update 1.1," Murray's Twitter post dated Nov. 27 reads.
For the uninitiated, "No Man's Sky" received negative feedback for what most gamers saw as a lack of promised features after the release. Players directed their disappointment at Hello Games, resulting in an investigation on the developer's possible false advertising of the video game and a hack of its official Twitter profile.
