One Direction Tour 2015 News: 1D Pays 'Marijuana Bond'; Zayn Malik Quits Tour Due to Stress
One Direction, the British pop band that has taken the world by storm, is performing in the Philippines for two concerts on March 21 and 22, 2015. Tickets had already been sold out for the first concert night as early as late last year, prompting a massive reaction from fans who were not able to buy tickets. This resulted in the producers adding another concert night.
While fans await the performances with wild anticipation, two recent updates have provided wrinkles to the event.
On Thursday, the Philippine Bureau of Immigration ordered One Direction to pay a cash bond of 200,000 Philippine pesos ($4,500) each for singers Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson. The bond is mandatory for them to be issued work permits. This will be forfeited should Malik or Tomlinson get caught using or promoting illegal drugs, the bureau said in a statement.
A video of Malik and Tomlinson seemingly smoking marijuana in a car while on a tour in Peru went viral last year. Marijuana is illegal in the Philippines, a mainly Catholic country where the Church continues to maintain a strong influence on society.
While it was confirmed that the concerts will push through, it is not clear whether the bonds were actually paid.
In a more recent development, Zayn Malik will not be performing in the Philippines concerts, and the rest of the tour (South Africa, Europe, United States) as he has been sent back home to Britain due to stress and the need to recuperate, according to a spokesman for One Direction.
The announcement came after pictures of Malik and a blonde woman holding hands and with arms around each other leaked online. The woman in the picture was not his fiancée Little Mix popstar Perrie Edwards. Malik had been vocal about his love for his fiancée.
The news about Malik not being part of the concert sent Filipino fans into a frenzy as they signed up to see the band complete. Malik has a lot of fans in the Philippines so the disappointment was palpable. It remains to be seen how the concerts would fare with only four of the five band members performing.
