'Orange is the New Black' season 5 news, spoilers: Danielle Brooks hints 'intense' storyline; unresolved questions to be answered
"Orange is the New Black" star Danielle Brooks recently shared a major revelation about the show, and she hinted that season 5 will take place in a span of three days.
Season 4 left off with the female inmates at Litchfield prison dealing with the arrival of new prison guards. Things had gone really dark for all of them after prison guard Piscatella (Brad William Henke) was hired to instill fear into the inmates. The struggle between the guards and the inmates eventually led to the death of Poussey (Samira Wiley). The finale wrapped up with a riot breaking out, with the usually calm and collected Daya (Dasha Polanco) picking up a gun from the floor and squarely pointing it at dishonest guard Thomas "Humps" Humphrey (Michael Torpey). The hour ended with that cliffhanger, hinting that season 5 will possibly explore the fallout from the huge standoff.
Brooks, who plays Taystee on the show, caught up with E! on the SAG Awards' red carpet on Sunday night, and she teased that the 15-episode fifth season "is done over the course of three days." The actress went on to say that the plot will be very "detailed" and "intense."
"Orange is the New Black" scored two awards that night: Best Female Actor in a TV Comedy Series (Uzo Aduba) and Best Ensemble in a TV Comedy Series. After winning her award, Aduba shared that a lot of unresolved questions will be answered in season 5.
Returning cast member Laverne Cox also weighed in on the upcoming season, and she mentioned that she was just as excited as viewers to know what's up ahead. Though the actress didn't spill further details about her character Sophia, she said she was personally impressed when she read the script.
"It's really, really good," Cox added. "When I read it, it was incredible, when we shot it, it was...intense. It's really, really intense. It manages...as intense as it all is, it still manages to have an irreverence and a spin that is funny and thoughtful," she went on to say.
Netflix has yet to announce an official premiere date for "Orange is the New Black" season 5, but the series is expected to return in mid-June 2017.
