'Orange Is the New Black' season 5 release date, spoilers: Daya could pull the trigger?
Daya (Dascha Polanco) may just go through with it and kill someone in the opening episode of "Orange Is the New Black" season 5.
In the final episode of "OITNB" season 4, Daya was seen pointing a loaded gun at one of the prison guards as he and another guard knelt before Daya and the cheering inmates. The scene was shocking not only for the revelation that Daya had a gun but because the inmate was -- unlike many of her fellow prisoners at Litchfield Penitentiary -- usually nonviolent.
However, with Poussey's (Samira Wiley) tragic and senseless death, the years of abuse and brutality at the hands of the new prison guards, and her own recent losses, Daya may just be compelled to pull the trigger and kill a prison guard or two.
According to Polanco, after Daya's fiance, the CO Bennett (Matt McGorry), abandoned her and her unborn child, after which her baby was taken away and placed in the foster care system, Daya has reached her tipping point and has nothing to lose.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress said that Daya's postpartum depression may have something to do with her recent actions. While she admitted that she knows nothing about "OITNB" creator Jenji Kohan's plans for season 5, she also said that she believes Daya could pull the trigger and that the inmate is definitely going through postpartum depression.
"She might pull back and think about being a mother and not wanting to miss the opportunity of being with her child," she said. "But a woman going through postpartum — at that point, they're very fragile and very sensitive."
"She's in a dark place," the actress said. "She's been fighting it for so long and now there's no way of her fighting it. Right now it's her accepting things and I think she's over it."
In a separate interview with THR, "OITNB" actress Jessica Pimentel, who plays Maria Ruiz, said that her character is also ready to go on a full-on war with the prison guards.
"She has nothing to lose and everything to gain at this point," she said, "and if you have nothing to lose, you really don't care if you live or die."
"Orange Is the New Black" season 5 will debut in 2017. The fourth season is currently streaming on Netflix.
