'Orange Is the New Black' season 5 release date, plot news: Returning cast members, possible season 5 release date revealed
"Orange Is the New Black" season 5 may still be more than half a year away but several details about the highly anticipated season have already dropped.
The Netflix comedy/drama has already been renewed until season 7, which means that the women of Litchfield Penitentiary have a lot more stories to tell. But what will happen in season 5 and which cast members are returning?
Fans expect series regulars Taylor Schilling (Piper Chapman), Laura Prepon (Alex Vause), Michael Harney (Sam Healy), Jackie Cruz (Marisol Gonzales), Danielle Brooks (Taystee Jefferson), Uzo Aduba (Crazy Eyes Warren) and Kate Mulgrew (Red Reznikov) to reprise their roles in "Orange Is the New Black" season 5.
In addition, Blair Brown is likely to return as Judy King. As a source points out, Judy knows a lot about the inner workings of the prison and whether or not she makes it out of Litchfield in season 5, her knowledge about the events there could be crucial to Taystee and Soso's (Kimiko Glenn) quest to get justice for the late Poussey (Samira Wiley).
Daya Diaz (Dascha Polanco), who was last seen pointing a gun at one of the correctional officers, will also likely still be in Litchfield in season 5. This is whether or not she actually pulls the trigger during the stand-off with the Litchfield officers. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year, Polanco revealed that Daya may actually commit murder in that scene.
"I could see her pulling the trigger," the actress said. "Daya's definitely experiencing some postpartum depression. She might pull back and think about being a mother and not wanting to miss the opportunity of being with her child. But a woman going through postpartum — at that point, they're very fragile and very sensitive," she added.
But while Daya's story may continue, this may not be the case for her mom, Almeida (Elizabeth Rodriguez), as well as for the psych ward inmates Lolly Whitehill (Lori Petty), Stella Carlin (Ruby Rose) and Claudette Pelage (Michelle Hurst).
Instead, it is suggested that "Orange Is the New Black" season 5 may see the arrival of a new group of inmates, which is said to complicate things at Litchfield even further.
While "Orange Is the New Black" season 5 is currently without an official release date, Cinema Blend says that the next season is likely to follow the show's standard mid-June release schedule. Season 5 is reportedly in production.
