'Orphan Black' season 5 spoilers, plot news: Bloody fifth season premiere in the offing? Spin-off being considered as series nears finale?

Will the "Orphan Black" season 5 premiere be a bloodbath? | Orphan Black/Facebook

"Orphan Black" season 5 is returning to the small screen sometime next year, and according to its showrunner, vital questions left over from the fourth season finale will be addressed right from the fifth run's get-go. However, he also insinuated that season 5 could be one virtual bloodbath.

Fans of the series know that in some episodes leading to the finale, several characters were left in ominous situations. Sarah Manning (Tatiana Maslany) was involved in a serious accident in episode 10 of season 4. The finale didn't resolve if Sarah would be able to survive the severity of her injuries.

More bad news bode for other characters when "Orphan Black" season 5 opens, what with Sarah's daughter, Kira Manning (Skyler Wexter) and her adoptive mother Siobhan Sadler (Maria Doyle Kennedy) being kidnapped by Ferdinand Chevalier (James Frain). Moreover, one of the clones, Rachel Duncan (also played by Maslany), tried opening the door to mysterious Westmoreland, which could lead to a bloody tragedy.

Nevertheless, if fans are worried that the fifth season of "Orphan Black" could lose major characters, co-creator Graeme Manson tried to allay those fears by saying that any more series-changing deaths in the upcoming episodes are still uncertain since some characters in the series are "too important," although he didn't state why they are.

"It's super hard and it comes up all the time," Manson said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

He went on to explain the importance of maintaining balance between dynamic impulses and parts of the arc that need to be continued, adding, "That goes not just for clones but for our supporting cast."

Meanwhile, Manson said in the same interview that the decision to end the series after five seasons was mutually made between him, director John Fawcett, and lead star Maslany. Apparently, they would rather keep the series "sharp and relevant" than repeat the story; thus, the decision to bring it to close while it's hot than let it leave the air with a watered-down storyline.

According to International Business Times, fans would get to learn more about P.T. Westmoreland in the upcoming season. In addition, answers to questions about Neolution will gradually be unveiled as the series goes deeper into the season.

As for a spin-off series to "Orphan Black," Manson said that while he and the director talk about it, their focus is on putting together season 5.

"Orphan Black" season 5 is set to come back on air sometime in 2017 on BBC America and Syfy Australia.
