'Outlander' season 3 news: Fall 2017 premiere set for Starz drama; production moves to South Africa in March
The third season of "Outlander" finally has a premiere date, and it will be a few months later than the show's usual spring release.
On Wednesday, Starz announced that the latest installment of "Outlander" is slated for a September 2017 premiere. However, the network has yet to announce an exact release date for season 3. After filming scenes in Scotland, production will move next month to Cape Town and South Africa — on the former set of another Starz series "Black Sails."
For the second half of season 1 and season 2, the series premiered in April. Due to the scale of production, however, the new season had to be delayed.
"While Droughtlander will last just a little longer, we feel it is important to allow the production the time and number of episodes needed to tell the story of the Voyager book in its entirety," said Starz President of Programming Carmi Zlotnik in a press release. "The scale of this book is immense, and we owe the fans the very best show. Returning in September will make that possible," he added.
Based on Diana Gabaldon's "Voyager," the 13-episode season will pick up with Claire's (Caitriona Balfe) struggles after returning to 1948. Her sudden reappearance and the birth of her child with Jamie (Sam Heughan) will put a strain on her marriage with Frank (Tobias Menzies). In the 18th century, Jamie attempt to rebuild his life after the loss of Claire and the tragic Battle of Culloden.
Only the final five episodes will be shot in South Africa, and before production resumes in March, stars Balfe and Heughan bid Scotland farewell in a promotional video. The pair also briefly talked about what they're looking forward to in the next filming location.
"There's sunshine, apparently. We don't know what that is," Heughan said, joking about the gloomy weather in Scotland. "We might get to ditch a few of these layers," Balfe added.
