"Outlander" season 3 will be unlike the show's first two seasons.

Unlike seasons 1 and 2, in which Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) were in their prime, the star-crossed couple will be middle-aged when they finally reunite in season 3. Apart from this, the third season's setting will also be very different. While the first two seasons were set on land, the main characters will take a major sea voyage in season 3, and it appears that the characters will be spending most of the show's new chapter on a ship and in a tropical destination.

In an interview with Vulture at a recent screening of "Star Trek Beyond," Heughan previewed "Outlander" season 3, saying that it will be a "completely different" show.

"Next year's stuff is probably the most interesting, in a way," he said. "We've been setting it up, setting the stage, introducing these characters, and now it goes into new, different worlds."

The actor also revealed that he has read the first script for season 3 and that he has been reading "Voyager," the Diana Gabaldon book on which "Outlander" season 3 is based.

When asked how he is preparing to play the role of an older Jamie, the actor teased: "I'm thinking about getting really fat. I'm thinking eating a lot and not working out would be really good."

"Do we really want to see that?" he added.

While the actor couldn't say much about what Jamie will look like in season 3, he did clarify that "it's less about his appearance, and more about who he is without Claire."

Speaking with Variety, Heughan went into how being separated from Claire for so long will affect Jamie.

"What sort of man is he now?" he asked. "She will eventually return, but they're both older, so what is Jamie, who is the man he's become?"

The official premiere date for "Outlander" season 3 has not been announced. Nonetheless, it will likely be within the early months of 2017.
