'Overwatch' Season 2 air date, spoilers: Major changes coming? Competitive play set to launch this September?
Here's something for fans of "Overwatch" season 2. Blizzard Entertainment has just confirmed that the game's competitive play will be launched this September and with it comes major changes.
According to James Kaplan, director of "Overwatch" season 2, one of the major changes to be expected has something to do with the skill rating scale. However, he was quick to point out that there will be a public test realm (PTR) before the major changes are completely rolled out.
Reports say Blizzard will be shifting its focus from the game's skill rating. Apparently, Kaplan doesn't want competitive players to get recognition based on the skill ratings anymore.
"We're also trying to take the focus a little bit away from skill rating. We don't want that number to be what you associate with you as a competitive player," The Bitbag quotes Kaplan as saying in a recent interview.
Moreover, the Sudden Death feature will no longer be incorporated in "Overwatch" season 2, with Kaplan saying, "Ties should be very, very rare on the hybrid maps and the payloads." Apparently, a tie will happen on the payloads only when no one pushes the cart and that ties will happen in Hybrids only if no one captures the payload from the get-go.
Draws will also no longer be part of "Overwatch" season 2. Should there be a draw, players will get all the points accrued. To give players a better idea, the ranking system for the competitive play will be:
- Bronze: 1 to 1,499
- Silver: 1, 500 to 1,999
- Gold: 2,000 to 2,499
- Platinum: 2,500 to 2,999
- Diamond: 3,000 to 3,499
- Master: 3,500 to 3,999
- Grandmaster: 4,000 to 5,000
Attack of the Fanboy noted that failure to play the game for more than a week will affect a player's ranking tremendously. Hence, players should try to log in at least once a week to stay in the top 500 tier. In addition, only skilled players will be chosen for the matchmaking system, thereby making the competitive play so much tougher.
"Overwatch" season 2 Competitive Play is expected to come out on Sept. 6.
