'Overwatch' wins Game of the Year at the 2016 Game Awards; new threat from Oasis map revealed
After being launch earlier this year, Blizzard Entertainment's multiplayer first-person shooter video game "Overwatch" has recently won the Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2016.
Blizzard's latest victory should not come as a surprise, with over 20 million copies sold during its first five months of release. According to reports, the game easily became China's fastest selling title of all time and had over 8 million active players during its beta. While the other games nominated in the category were all critically-acclaimed ("Titanfall 2," "Inside," "Doom," and "Uncharted 4"), nothing can compare to the game that became a fan-favorite worldwide.
Blizzard's Ray Gresko received the award and delivered a touching message about what the game is all about. "While we've been very happy with how the game has been received, we're also extremely proud that this game and the world that we're building has a message and it's a message about heroism," he said. "It's a message about diversity. It's a message about a bright and positive and hopeful future. And these are all things that we really believe everyone needs a little bit of right now," he said.
On another note, a new map for "Overwatch" has been released for PC players to test out. Named "Oasis," the map is anything but peaceful because of its metropolitan setting. This means additional challenges including urban hazards that players must be cautious of.
In a gameplay video featuring the new DLC, the Oasis map includes a lot of cars speeding around highways. It's also worth noting that these cars are not just for aesthetics because they can actually hurt reckless players. Similar to real life, players have to look both ways before crossing the street to stay alive during a match. Also part of the map is jump pads that help players to navigate around the map easily without having an unfortunate fatality because of the speeding vehicles.
"Overwatch" is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows PC.
