The "Pacific Rim" sequel recently had a change of title, and it has been revealed that it is slated for a 2018 release date. Meanwhile, no official plot details have been released, but the storyline will revolve around Stacker's (Idris Elba) son.

"Pacific Rim" is a sci-fi movie directed by Guillermo del Toro, which told the story of the Earth being at war with gigantic monsters called the Kaiju that come from an interdimensional portal located at the heart of the Pacific Ocean. To defend themselves, the humans created humanoid mechas about the same size of these monsters, and they are called Jaegers. Two pilots can control these mechs through the neural synching of their minds.

The film ended with the portal being sealed, and all celebrated that the war with the Kaiju is over.

In 2014, it was announced that "Pacific Rim" will be getting a sequel, still to be directed by del Toro, with the subtitle "Maelstrom." Star John Boyega, who will play as Stacker's son, posted a photo of his script folder on Instagram confirming the title.

But recently, Legendary Pictures held a press conference announcing their new hires. The statement included the anticipated "Pacific Rim" sequel but with a different title. It was now titled "Uprising," Collider confirmed.

No official plot details have been released, except that it will revolve around Stacker's son based on the leaked set photos from film production. As seen from the photos, Boyega is wandering through what looks like a wasteland and there has been no sight of Jaegers.

Back in 2014, del Toro shared that the sequel will delve into what the world will do with the Jaeger technology "once the Kaiju are not a threat." He also said that Kaijus will still be around the second film.

"You're gonna get a lot of that, but the Kaijus are very different and you're gonna see a very different type of the robots I think. It's gonna be quite a different adventure," del Toro said.

But years later and with a different title, the plot of the film might have changed into something very different.

"Pacific Rim: Uprising" will hit theaters on Feb. 23, 2018.
