'Prison School' Season 2 news 2016: TV adaptation's new season still looks doubtful
It's been months since any news on the animated TV series "Prison School's" ("Kangoku Gakuen" in Japanese) second season has come out. Could a second season even be possible?
Last fans heard, a second installment of the TV series is not coming any time soon as its director, Tsutomo Mizushima, has his schedule filled up for the next couple of years, preventing him from producing a "Prison School" season 2 for the time being. Such was revealed when, in September last year, Japanese horror and mystery author Naoyuki Uchida took to Twitter and praised Mizushima on his work, as reported by OtakuTale. Uchida asked if a second season was upcoming, but Mizushima answered that it had become impossible because of his filled up schedule.
Season one of "Prison School" aired last year, and the original video animation (OVA) was released March of this year. Season one had the boys imprisoned by the Underground Student Council (USC) for the entire season and it ended with the tables being turned with the USC finding themselves behind bars while the boys enjoyed their freedom. The OVA followed the life of the boys after prison, and with some of them (specifically Joe) finding it hard to readjust to being free. He then attempted to get himself imprisoned again, but Andre foiled his plans.
People who read the manga, however, know that the story is far from over. With the USC imprisoned, a new group of wardens have been taking control, and they are the Aboveground Student Council or ASC (apparently being plainly called the "Student Council" was not an option). The ASC's leader, Kate, has a history with Mari, and she plans on making Mari's stay in prison as unpleasant as possible.
Even though the anime has been put on hold, this shouldn't discourage fans from expecting a second season in the long run. The "Attack on Titan" anime took three years to finally get a second season; who's to say the same couldn't happen to "Prison School?"
The "Prison School" manga, on the other hand, has been going swimmingly for the past five years since its publication back in 2011. Some fans even prefer reading the manga to the anime, as the quality of the art is said to be more detailed as compared to the animation. Also, it's been announced that a spin-off featuring the vice president will be released this coming August.
"Prison School" is a weekly manga series by Akira Hiramoto, and is published by Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine.
