'Red Dead Redemption 2' release date, news: Take-Two CEO provides update on game's content
A lot of fans are waiting for the return of the "Red Dead Redemption" franchise which is expected to come in fall 2017, but not much of the game's plot has been revealed. Luckily, the developers have given a little update for the fans on what to expect from the game, which is said to contain a lot of "emotional depth."
During an MKM Partners event, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick had this to say about "Red Dead Redemption 2": "The conventional wisdom was of course that a western wouldn't work... We took a different point of view, which is that very occasionally westerns capture the imagination of the public. When we launched 'Red Dead,' it did. And those times were right for that. And I think the times are right for a big, sprawling, optimistic view of America — and that's not meant to be cute."
Zelnick may be on to something when he said that the "times were right" for another open-world Western game. Just this year saw the release of several Western movies, one of which was the remake of "The Magnificent Seven" starring Chris Pratt and Denzel Washington. The Cohen brother's latest movie, "Hail, Caesar!," also dealt with the production of Western movies back in the '50s.
The most popular Western product this year, however, seems to be HBO's newest series, "Westworld." This takes place in a high-tech theme park in which robots act out characters in a cowboy setting. The series has been garnering a lot of critical praise and is already renewed for another season.
The "Red Dead" trailer seems to tease seven playable characters for the game. The first one had only John Marsten as the playable hero, but it looks like Rocktstar will be taking a page out of "Grand Theft Auto's" book and have several different playable options for gamers.
No official release date has been announced for the title, but fans can expect "Red Dead Redemption 2" to hit shelves by fall 2017.
