'Reign' season 4 release date news 2016: Season reportedly to be last
"Reign" season 4 will reportedly be the show's last. According to the latest reports, The CW is pulling the plug on the show after its upcoming run due to its low ratings.
Through the course of three years of the series, the last season has garnered the lowest ratings and viewership. Although it started strong, it quickly dipped as the third season progressed.
The highest number of viewers "Reign" had in its latest run was 1.24 million (via TV by the Numbers). That went as low as 0.76 million. By the time of the finale, it increased to 0.93 million.
The "Reign" season 4 renewal even came as a shock to many, but it goes to show that The CW is not ready to let go of the show yet. The show was renewed back in March with the likes of "The Flash," "Arrow" and "Jane the Virgin."
In an official statement about the renewal, CW President Mark Pedowitz said:
"As we continue to further our strategy of more year-round original programming, picking up these 11 series for the 2016-2017 season puts us in a great position of having proven, high-quality shows to launch in the fall as well as midseason and summer of 2017."
He also expressed his desire to see "Reign" go on. "We've got to find out if she goes back to Scotland," Pedowitz teased in the Golden Globes via Variety.
However, it is believed that if the show continues to decline and "Reign" season 4 does not redeem itself, it could be on The CW's chopping block soon and might not even reach season 5.
"Reign" season 4 will reportedly only have 16 episodes as a sign that it is indeed struggling to keep its spot on the network. The previous season had 18 while the first two both had 22.
The new season will follow Mary (Adelaide Kane) find not one but two new husbands after losing Francis (Toby Regbo). Torrance Coombs will not reprise his role as Count Paris.
"Reign" season 4 will premiere next year.
