The midseason finale of "Revenge" has just aired and fans are still in shock at a major character's death.

However, Executive Producer Sunil Nayar told TV Line that it's been laid out for quite a while now—even before this season began—and that the actor playing the character was prepared for it. (Warning: Major spoilers ahead!)

In an interview, Nayar said he spoke to Joshua Bowman at the beginning of the season. "He and I were on the same page, wanting to take a big swing at the end of our winter finale, and wanting to see if we could do it in a redemptive way; that moment between [Emily and Daniel] was so beautiful at the end. It was also a way for us to keep shifting what the show is about, so we never get complacent and the audience never knows what's coming next," Nayar told TV Line.

In the last episode, we found out that Kate (Courtney Ford) was not actually an FBI agent. She was actually working for Malcolm Black. When Victoria (Madeline Stowe) accused her of pretending to work for the FBI when she actually worked for Malcolm, Kate did not deny it. Victoria reminded Kate that what she and her boyfriend had between them was none of her business, and suggested that she go for Emily instead.

Kate confronted Emily and told her that she is Malcolm's daughter. Although Emily was not aware of what was about to happen, she came prepared for it. The meeting erupted into a vicious fight. Kate fired at Emily but Daniel (Joshua Bowman) suddenly jumped in front to save Emily from a bullet from Kate's gun. Kate was then shot by Jack (Nick Wechler). Ironically, Jack had been dating Kate but rushed to Emily's house when he found out her real identity.
