'Riverdale' spoilers: Cole Sprouse vows to fight for Jughead's asexuality in The CW series
Jughead Jones is known to be Archie Andrews' best friend in the comic books, but things may not be the same in The CW's upcoming "Riverdale" series.
The character, portrayed by "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody" star Cole Sprouse, is described as the opinionated heartthrob who is trying to move past the rift that happened between him and his former best friend Archie, portrayed by K.J. Apa.
In the "Archie" comic series on which the series was loosely based, Jughead and Archie are known for being inseparable and to get in all kinds of trouble together. The reason for the animosity between the two characters in "Riverdale" is still unrevealed.
Jughead was also known to be asexual in the comic books. This means that he has no interest to have a romantic relationship with any gender. But when Sprouse was asked by HollywoodLife during an interview at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour, the actor revealed that the "Riverdale" version will be a little different. "Jughead will have romances with women ... and burgers," the actor stated.
The former Disney Channel child star claimed that he actually tried to talk to the show's producers to allow him to stick to the comic version's asexuality. But it seems like his appeal did not work at the moment. However, the actor also claimed that Jughead could still discover his asexuality in the future.
"I think there's still a lot of room in Riverdale for that [though]," Cole said. "Asexuality is not one of those things in my research that is so understood at face value and I think maybe the development of that narrative could also be something very interesting and very unique and still resonate with people, and not step on anyone's toes."
The CW will release the premiere episode of "Riverdale" on Thursday, Jan. 26.
