'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' release date, news and updates: Jyn Erso welcomes soldiers to the rebellion in new TV spots
Gareth Edwards' "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is looking to be one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. Marketing for the movie is going on full steam ahead this month. Two new TV spots have been released for the movie, and it has Lyn Erso (Felicity Jones) welcoming the new soldiers to the Rogue One squadron.
The first clip has a lot of footage from the previous trailers, but it also has some new lines from the dialogue and other setpieces. A huge swarm of TIE fighters is seen being dispatched in space, and it looks like the movie will include a heated space battle between X-Wings and TIE fighters.
The second clip also has new footage of K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) taking out Stormtroopers using his bare hands. For awhile, fans have been wondering how the defector Imperial droid will be using his skills to fight in the field, and the clip gives good insight on it. There's also a look at a new, smaller alien that hasn't been showcased in previous trailers. It looks like it will be fighting alongside Saw Guerrera's (Forest Whitaker) forces on planet Jedha.
The international trailer of the movie has also revealed that Jyn's parents have given her a crystal necklace, and some fans have guessed that it could be a Kyber crystal. In "Star Wars" lore, Kyber crystals are the core component of a Jedi's lightsaber, and these are also crucial in the making of the Imperial superweapon, the Death Star.
There is also speculation going on that Jyn is force-sensitive, much like the character of Donnie Yen, the blind Chirrut Imwe, who showcases skilled hand-to-hand combat in the trailers.
"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is set to come out on Friday, Dec. 16.
