'Scream Queens' season 2 spoilers: Ryan Murphy teases S2; Emma Roberts on kissing 'one or both' new actors
"Scream Queens" co-creator Ryan Murphy has revealed the reasons behind the new setting and the new storyline in the show's upcoming season.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy said that the comedy horror's new setting (a hospital) and new characters (including "Scream Queens" newbies John Stamos and Taylor Lautner ) were intended to broaden the show and appeal to a much wider audience.
"We all love that show, and the viewership was very young," he said. "It was huge on Hulu and the DVR, so [Fox TV Group's] Dana [Walden] and I felt like, 'OK, we have our base — now what do you do to broaden it?'"
According to the "Scream Queens" boss, he loved the idea of a horror series set in a hospital because it allowed for the exploration of big medical mystery cases.
While the freshman season of the Fox series was set in the fictional Wallace University, season 2 will find Emma Roberts (who plays Chanel Oberlin) and her "Scream Queens" co-stars in a hospital run by fellow returnee Jamie Lee Curtis, who played Dean Cathy Munsch in season 1. They will be joined by Stamos, Lautner, Cecily Strong, and Colton Haynes.
In an interview with Access Hollywood, Curtis said that she loves that Murphy felt the need to try something new in season 2.
"And, as we've started shooting, all of us have said... we'd be so bored if we we're back at Kappa House," she explained, calling the move "very clever" and the introduction of new characters "very fun."
"Before the show did seem very young, but now I hope there's something for everybody," Murphy told THR.
Meanwhile, Roberts confirmed that Stamos and Lautner will be playing some of the Chanels' love interests in the upcoming "Scream Queens" installment.
"There's been some kissing happening, which has been fun," the actress, who plays the original Chanel, teased.
When asked if she has a kissing scene with either of the new "Scream Queens" actors, Roberts told Access Hollywood that Chanel will share kisses with "one or both of them."
"Scream Queens" season 2 debuts on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
