'Scream' season 2 finale news, season 3 plot: EPs talk killer's motivation, possible S3 story; Halloween special announced
"Scream" season 2 ended with the unveiling of latest killer's identity — someone not many had suspected was behind this season's string of murders in the fictional town of Lakewood.
While many had expected that Emma (Willa Fitzgerald) would be exposed as the person behind the latest killing spree, it was actually Kieran (Amadeus Serafini), her boyfriend, who had been menacing Lakewood in season 2. Kieran was also revealed to be the original partner of Piper (Amelia Rose Blaire), the season 1 killer.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, "Scream" co-executive producers and co-showrunners Michael Gans and Richard Register said that it was always their intention to reveal Kieran as the show's new serial killer. The pair also disclosed that there was another "tiny" option that became a possibility prior to their pitching of season 2, but that when they met with MTV and Dimension Television, it was Kieran that they presented as the season 2 murderer.
"As opposed to other times where it changed greatly, this season it was as written," Gans said, "and in fact the same motivation from the beginning."
"It was always that Kieran and Piper were this killing duo, a 'Natural Born Killers' situation, and Piper got killed in the middle of that, so he was exacting his revenge ultimately," Register added.
While "Scream" is yet to be renewed by MTV, Gans and Register spoke to TVLine about what could happen in a potential season 3.
According to Gans, while it's hard to predict the exact events in a possible season 3, Kieran's story will definitely continue.
"And I think Emma is the right character to choose not to take the kill," he added. "Kieran's alive, which means anything can happen."
Meanwhile, following Tuesday's "Scream" after-show "Scream After Dark," MTV announced via Twitter that it will air a two-hour "Scream" Halloween special in October. The special will reportedly answer the questions posed by the season 2 finale.
"See that, #ScreamTeam? Stay tuned for October when answers to our Season 2 questions are put to rest. #MTVScream," the video, posted on Wednesday, Aug. 17, was captioned.
No other details about the upcoming Halloween special were announced.
