'Sense8' season 2 air date news, spoilers: Kala, Wolfgang share Christmas romance as Will struggles against Mr. Whispers

Netflix announces the release dates for new episodes of the sci-fi series, "Sense8." | Facebook/Sense8TV

Netflix will finally be streaming a new episode of the sci-fi drama series "Sense8." Will the two-hour Christmas special be enough to tide fans over until the second season comes next year?

The online streaming site has confirmed an air date for the highly anticipated "Sense8" Christmas special. However, this doesn't mean that the second season will be streaming any time soon. The announcement was made via a post on the show's official Facebook page with an image consisting of white text on a black background. The image was simply captioned, "Our story continues," and contained the scheduled release dates for both the upcoming special and the second season that is coming next year.

Not much is known about the Christmas special, except what can be deduced from the first-look photos and brief summary shared by Spoiler TV. From the looks of it, Kala (Tina Desai) and Wolfgang's (Max Riemelt) budding romance may finally take some significant strides during the snow-filled holiday. However, it is not clear whether these photos are suggesting they will finally be meeting in person, or it's just one of those projected appearances that sensates see inside their own heads whenever they communicated.

There are also screenshots of sensate, Lito (Miguel Ángel Silvestre), and his lover, Hernando (Alfonso Herrera) standing over what looked like a grave; one with Sun (Doona Bae) in prison with the rest of the sensates gathered behind her in full support; and one with Will (Brian J. Smith) tending over Riley (Tuppence Middleton) with Mr. Whispers (Terrence Mann) standing behind him.

It will be remembered that in the "Sense8" season 1 finale, Mr. Whispers gained access into Will's mind after the latter accidentally made eye contact with the former. This further gave the show's big bad the ability to tap into Will's cluster and see everybody else through his eyes. It was because of this that Will chose to inject himself with a drug that rendered him unconscious until he, Riley, and in effect the rest of their fellow sensates could hide away from Mr. Whispers.

Does the screenshot indicate that none of them has figured out yet how to block Mr. Whispers from Will's mind? How will this affect the sensates' interconnected stories going forward? Will the Christmas special bring new hope to Will's cluster, or will he be bringing them all down a rough patch in season 2?

The "Sense8" Christmas special streams on Netflix on Friday, Dec. 23, while the 10-episode second season launches next year on Friday, May 5.
