'Shadowhunters' season 2 episode 8 spoilers: Everybody's biggest fears are revealed in 'Love Is a Devil'

The youngest Lightwood, Max (Jack Fulton), is about to get his first rune in a formal ceremony that quickly escalates into something else in the next episode of "Shadowhunters."

A Rune Ceremony is done for a young Shadowhunter who is about to begin formal training and is thus ready to receive his or her first rune. And being the oldest Lightwood sibling, Alec (Matthew Daddario) is tasked to organize the event for his younger brother. He also sees this as the perfect opportunity to formally introduce his warlock partner, Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.), to his family.

But in an episode curiously titled "Love Is A Devil," things are bound to go south, and they eventually do when a mysterious turn of events forces everyone in attendance to face their biggest fears, completely overshadowing Max's supposedly memorable event.

Has the Institute been infiltrated once more? If not, then what else could possibly cause these people's deepest, darkest, and unfiltered emotions to rise to the surface and make them as purely and wrathfully honest as Clary (Katherine McNamara) and Lightwood matriarch Maryse (Nicola Correia Damude) are in the trailer for the next episode?

In it, Clary blatantly calls someone, presumably Alec, a murderer, while Maryse throws a dagger at her adopted son, Jace (Dominic Sherwood) over the recent revelation that he has demon blood running through his veins.

In yet another scene, Alec is shown standing on the ledge, looking like he's about to jump off the roof. Could this be because of guilt over what Clary said? Are the overly honest Clary and Maryse even real or merely a figment of Jace and Alec's troubled minds? What other hurtful things will be said, and what other frightful things will be seen as the hour progresses? And after everything is said and done, will Max still be able to reclaim the night and get his first rune?

"Shadowhunters" season 2 episode 8 airs on Monday, Feb. 20, at 8 p.m. EST on Freeform.
