Showrunner Steven Moffat recently confirmed that "Sherlock" won't be ending in season 4, contrary to previous reports suggesting the show's impending conclusion.

With every season of "Sherlock," lead stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman gain more popularity among viewers and are given more acting projects. Despite their busy schedules, the duo always seems to find time for the BBC drama. However, Cumberbatch made a comment back in October that led fans to believe that season 4 will mark the program's curtain call. The "Doctor Strange" actor already clarified that he was just misquoted, but it didn't stop fans from worrying about their favorite show's looming end.

To give fans some peace of mind, showrunner Steven Moffat spoke with Entertainment Weekly to stress that Cumberbatch was misquoted and that a fifth season remains a possibility. "It seems to be impossible these days not to be misquoted," Moffat explained. "He was quite specific about being keen to carry on... We haven't even seen this [season air] yet... We haven't sat down with the intent to anything yet. But we're always aware that it could be over. But the fact is Benedict did not say that," the showrunner went on to say.

Season 4 picks up with Sherlock (Cumberbatch) back in Britain and John (Freeman) being a first-time parent to his daughter with Mary (Amanda Abbington). According to Freeman, the changes brought by his new baby won't affect the show too much. However, now that he is a family man, John's dynamic with Sherlock might be a bit different than before.

As for a possible fifth season, Freeman mentioned that he is grateful for the opportunity to work on "Sherlock," but he also wants to do other things. Although he didn't exactly say he's not on board for another season, the actor stated that an "ending is not a thing to be afraid of."

Making the Beatles as an example, Freeman further explained that "certain things should end" no matter how good they are. "I think everything is supposed to be finite," he continued. "Who knows? I never really know once we've finished a series, because it takes a long time to make another one."

"Sherlock" season 4 premieres on Sunday, Jan. 1, on BBC One.
