'Sherlock' season 4 release date: Benedict Cumberbatch says upcoming season could be last
Benedict Cumberbatch might be hanging the coat after "Sherlock" season 4. The actor said in his interview with GQ magazine that the upcoming season feels like it ushers them to "the end of an era."
"It goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately. We never say never on the show. I'd love to revisit it, I'd love to keep revisiting it, I stand by that," the actors said.
"But in the immediate future we all have things that we want to crack on with and we've made something very complete as it is, so I think we'll just wait and see. The idea of never playing him again is really galling," he continued.
Needless to say, fans share the same sentiment with Cumberbatch with regards to the idea of not seeing him sporting Sherlock's iconic curly locks anymore after "Sherlock" season 4.
However, Cumberbatch's remark lines up with what executive producer and creator Mark Gatiss said about "Sherlock" season 4 during his visit to the Victoria & Albert Museum.
"There are things that come to fruition in this series which we've been planning for years," Gatiss stated as quoted by Radio Times.
Gatiss, who also plays the role of Sherlock's brother Mycroft, also said that "Sherlock" season 4 features life-changing events, describing it as the best season so far.
It appears as though "Sherlock" season 4 is structured to tie all loose ends presented in the series. What is a mystery at the moment is if the team behind the show did so to end the show altogether.
The popularity of both Cumberbatch and co-star Martin Freeman could also be a big hurdle in continuing the show.
In fact, their hectic schedules led to the delay of the upcoming season. However, the actors are very committed to the show. This suggests that the willingness is there, but fans will be required to be patient.
"Sherlock" is yet to be renewed for a fifth season. Season 4 is set to premiere next year with "The Six Thatchers." The second episode is titled "The Lying Detective." The title of the third one was kept under wraps.
