'Sherlock' season 4 release date, spoilers: Sherlock loses his mind? First look at Sherlock and Watson's season 4 ensemble
First, they teased that "Sherlock" season 4 will be the darkest season to date. Now, writers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss are teasing that the upcoming season will take Sherlock Holmes and John Watson to the pinnacle of the BBC series' overall arc.
The last installment of "Sherlock," the BBC series special "Abominable Bride" saw Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott) toying with Sherlock's (Benedict Cumberbatch) sanity. By the end of that special, the mental stability of the beloved detective from 221B Baker Street seemed questionable.
That is probably why Cumberbatch told Collider in an interview during the San Diego Comic-Con last July that Moriarty continues to terrify Sherlock. The actor said Sherlock's face-offs with Moriarty has scarred the detective so much, and apparently, fans and viewers of the series will realize just how deeply scared of Moriarty he is as "Sherlock" season 4 unfolds.
A promotional photo posted on the series' Twitter page shows Sherlock and Watson's (Martin Freeman) official look for season 4. Quite noticeable is Watson's white hair, which led some fans to assume that season 4's baddies, Moriarty and Culverton Smith (Toby Jones), were too much for the dynamic duo to handle. Check out the photo below:
Is this purportedly "darkest season" to date the cause of Watson's seemingly grayer hair? Or has fatherhood aged Sherlock's partner? The Daily Mail recently shared photos of Mary (Amanda Abbington) and John Watson, sporting a prominent salt and pepper hair, with a baby and a large dog walking alongside Sherlock.
On the other hand, Watson's hair may be due to Mary, who, according to reports, will betray her husband and Sherlock. It has been teased that a tragedy will befall some characters in the upcoming "Sherlock" season 4, and some fans are surmising that it has something to do with John and Mary.
"Sherlock" season 4 is expected to premiere in January 2017. Meanwhile, stay tuned for more news and updates about the series.
