'Sherlock' season 4 spoilers news: Last season for show; Benedict Cumberbatch to focus on 'Doctor Strange'

Reports have come out saying that the upcoming fourth season of "Sherlock" may be the final installment of this vastly followed series. As filming for the next run of the crime drama series comes to a close, fans are dealing with the possibility that Benedict Cumberbatch will just be too busy to make later seasons of the show.

The actor is said to be focusing on his other project, the film "Doctor Strange," so he will need to shed off his titular and iconic role as Sherlock. Martin Freeman is also said to be winding down as Dr. John Watson to free time for his part in "Black Panther."

In an interview with The Telegraph, "Sherlock's" executive producer, Steven Moffat, hints at this glaring probability.

"I don't know how long we can keep it going. I'm personally willing but I'm hardly the main draw. I would be moderately surprised if this was the last time we ever made this show. But it absolutely could be."

He emphasized though that "Sherlock" making it to season 4 is a testament to Cumberbatch's and Freeman's commitment to bringing the show to its fans. Both are decidedly huge stars who do not need the money they make from the series. Rather, they have kept doing it because they want to.

Moffat, however, does not discount the possibility that the show will only go on a prolonged hiatus after the fourth season. If and when the time comes that the two actors would become free to do another run, it would be possible to have another season in a few years.

He said, "There would be nothing strange in stopping for a while. It could go on forever, coming back now and again."

With the future after "Sherlock" season 4 being unclear, Amanda Abbington, who plays Mary Watson, may very well have aptly described the situation as it is when she posted a last-day photo on Twitter last Wednesday, July 20.

She tweeted, "Last day... Series 4. #Sherlock #setlock"

"Sherlock" season 4 will be back in 2017.
