'Sleepy Hollow' season 4 spoilers: Production begins, premiere teased

Tom Mison as Ichabod Crane in "Sleepy Hollow" | FOX

Production for "Sleepy Hollow" season 4 has officially begun, with the title of the premiere already revealed — "Columbia."

The title was revealed by executive producer Albert Kim as he commemorated the first day of shooting. The title likely refers to the new location of the series, which is the District of Columbia.

Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) is headed to Washington in "Sleepy Hollow" season 4 following the death of his partner and Second Witness Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie).

In this new setting, the remaining Witness will meet a new partner, new allies, and a new enemy to be played by "Lost" alum Jeremy Davies as he takes on a bigger adventure outside of Sleepy Hollow.

Janina Gavankar from "True Blood" will be Crane's new partner Diana, a single mother who does not believe in the supernatural. Because of this, she and Crane will start off on the wrong foot.

However, the two will eventually learn to get along with each other after realizing that they are not really that different, having experienced heartbreaking losses in their lives.

Many were shocked that "Sleepy Hollow" season 4 was given the green light despite the exit of its female lead. This is something that Fox Entertainment President David Madden talked about at the Television Critics Association on Aug. 8.

Madden revealed that a lot of tough conversations have been had before the show's continuation and Beharie's departure from the show was agreed upon.

"Crane and Abbie were the spine of the show in a lot of ways, so it was difficult to figure out if it was the right thing to do, to continue or not," Madden explained, as reported by Deadline.

"But the producers pitched us an array of new characters and new situations for Crane to get into. ... The first seven scripts are really fun. We think there's a lot of good new stories to tell," he continued.

"Sleepy Hollow" season 4 will premiere early next year on FOX.
