A lot of "Star Trek" fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Bryan Fuller's new "Star Trek: Discovery." It was originally slated to come out on CBS in January 2017 but the show has now been delayed to air sometime around May.

According to Deadline, the delay was requested by executive producer Alex Kurtzman and Fuller himself. They wanted more time to develop the show so by the time it comes around in May 2017, the audience will receive something befitting the "Trek" franchise.

In a joint statement put out by the two, they said: "Bringing 'Star Trek' back to television carries a responsibility and mission: to connect fans and newcomers alike to the series that has fed our imaginations since childhood. We aim to dream big and deliver, and that means making sure the demands of physical and post-production for a show that takes place entirely in space, and the need to meet an air date, don't result in compromised quality. Before heading into production, we evaluated these realities with our partners at CBS and they agreed: Star Trek deserves the very best, and these extra few months will help us achieve a vision we can all be proud of."

Very few series have come to make the cultural impact that "Star Trek" has had on the world. Gene Rodenberry's utopian vision of the future has spanned numerous spin-offs like "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Star Trek: Enterprise" and "Star Trek: First Contact."

With Fuller's busy schedule, it's only right that he asks for an extension to work on the series. Fuller is also busy with the TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman's best-selling novel, "American Gods," which is also set to come out next year.

"Star Trek: Discovery" is said to be the first spin-off that will not feature the captain of the ship as the central character of the show. Hopefully "Discovery" can please the existing fans and bring in some fans from the newer generation as well.

"Star Trek: Discovery" is set to come out in May 2017.
