'Star Trek: Discovery' release date, news: Alex Kurtzman talks about casting of Michelle Yeoh, Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp
Former showrunner and series co-creator Bryan Fuller may have left the project, but "Star Trek: Discovery" is in good hands because executive producer/co-creator Alex Kurtzman is still onboard. There is a lot to look forward to, and in an interview with IGN, Kurtzman revealed that they are happy with the casting of Michelle Yeoh, Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp.
"I will not give you one detail about the show other than to tell you that I think that Michelle gets to play a part that has so many dimensions to it and is so perfect for where we want to go over the course of the season and maybe even beyond," Kurtzman said when he talked about Captain Georgiou, the Starfleet captain Yeoh is going to portray.
Meanwhile, "Hellboy" and "Pan's Labyrinth" actor Jones is going to be playing Lt. Saru, a Starfleet science officer and a member of an alien species viewers have yet to meet in the "Star Trek" universe. The part is just perfect for an actor who is used to playing roles that require a lot of makeup and sometimes even prosthetics.
"Doug Jones, you know, one of the greatest. What he did in Pan's Labyrinth has embedded itself in my mind forever," Kurtzman stated.
"Rent" star Rapp is cast as Lt. Stamets, an astromycologist and the U.S.S. Discovery's science officer. Sources say Stamets is the gay character Fuller talked about earlier this year. "I've been a fan of Anthony's for a long time. He's just a brilliant actor," Kurtzman said.
Kurtzman is excited with their casting choices right now, but there is still a long road ahead for them. They have yet to cast the female lead character and the rest of the supporting roles will have to be filled before production begins early next year.
"Star Trek: Discovery" is scheduled to premiere on CBS in May 2017 before moving on to CBS All Access.
