'Star Wars Battlefront 2' release date and news: Game is set to be released fall of 2017

"Star Wars Battlefront 2" is set to come out on the fall of 2017 | EA/Star Wars

The last downloadable content (DLC) that will be released for EA's "Star Wars Battlefront" will be this December's "Scarif" DLC. EA will then move on to make "Battlefront 2" which will focus on the new worlds and characters that were introduced in "Star Wars - The Force Awakens." Though fans have known that the sequel will be coming, no date has been announced — until now.

EA's Blake Jorgensen said during a press conference that fans can expect "Battlefront 2" to come out "a year from now." He also added that the developers are trying their best to make the sequel an "extremely deep and engaging offering."

The last statement left some people speculating as to the future of the game. Upon its release, a lot of classic "Battlefront" fans were disappointed at the lack of gameplay options, campaign missions and maps. This is a huge contrast from its predecessor, "Star Wars: Battlefront II" which had multiple gameplay modes, space battles and single player campaigns.

Some fans have pointed out their frustration at the new direction EA was taking "Battlefront," but the comment on making the game "deep and engaging" could probably change the minds of some players who have lost their faith in the franchise.

As for the future of "Star Wars" games, Jorgensen said, "We'll most likely have one 'Star Wars' title a year for the next three to four years."

That's good news to any "Star Wars" game enthusiast since, during the time of Lucas Arts, the video games were a necessary tool in bringing fans into the world that the movies couldn't delve deeper into. Rumor has it that there is an "Uncharted"-style Han Solo game in the works — no doubt a way to boost interest in the character in time for his spin-off movie due 2018.

"Star Wars Battlefront 2" will be released in fall 2017.
