'Star Wars: Han Solo' casting news: Woody Harrelson in talks to play the role of Han's mentor
Woody Harrelson might land another mentoring role in the next installment of the "Star Wars" franchise.
A report from Variety reveals that several sources are claiming that "The Hunger Game" star is in early talks with Disney Films to portray the role of Han Solo's mentor in the upcoming "Star Wars" spinoff that centers on the life of the Rebel Alliance general.
But while the details about Harrelson's possible character remains scarce, Inverse claims that the actor might portray the role of Garris Shrike, the man who raised the former smuggler.
Shrike was first introduced in the novel "The Paradise Snare" written by Ann C. Crispin. He was described as the bounty hunter who turned into a life of crime by gathering a group of orphans and use them to steal and do a lot of criminal activities aboard the retired troopship called the Trader's Luck. One of the orphans who worked for him is Han Solo. The two had a tumultuous relationship, until Shrike was shot to death by one of his enemies.
However, the publication also pointed out that it could also be possible to see a new mentor character in the upcoming "Han Solo" spinoff film if the film outfit will choose to veer away from Shrike's arc.
Other details about the upcoming film remain to be under wraps at the moment, but Disney and Lucasfilm both announced in July 2015 that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were both hired to helm the movie.
The film will star "Hail, Ceasar!" actor Alden Ehrenreich to portray the role of the young Han Solo. He will be joined by "Game of Thrones" star Emilia Clarke in a still unannounced role. Jack Reynor and Taron Egerton will also appear in the movie.
Disney is slated to release the "Han Solo" standalone film on May 25, 2018.
