'Star Wars Rebels' season 3 air date, spoilers news: Grand Admiral Thrawn featured on new trailer
Though it has been confirmed by "Star Wars Rebels" creator Dave Filoni that Darth Vader will not be in the upcoming season, many fans are rejoicing due to the arrival of expanded universe character Grand Admiral Thrawn. A trailer which was released recently showcases Thrawn's abilities as well as proof that he one of the Rebellion's most dangerous adversaries.
According to ComicBookMovie.com, the Ghost crew is now being led by a more powerful Ezra, and they have been helping the rebellion collect more forces and ships in order to beat the Empire. The Empire, however, is pulling no punches and has sought the help of the coldly analytical Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Unlike Vader who rules with fear and intimidation, Thrawn chooses to approach his enemies with empathy and studies them meticulously in order to predict their next moves. His understanding of the importance of culture has made him a threat like no other (the first trailer saw him studying Sabine's "graffiti"), and the rebels will have to find a way to outwit his master strategies.
The expanded universe, which is now debunked, also showcased Thrawn as a leader who was able to instill loyalty among his troops — a trait that Vader couldn't even procure. Where Vader chooses to use stormtroopers as cannon fodder, Thrawn listens to the suggestions of his men, making them feel more loyal to the Empire's cause, and making them more fierce in battle.
Thrawn's abilities as a military tactician have even made the Empire opt to put him in a higher position despite his non-human heritage. The Imperials are said to value the human race above all else, but with Thrawn, the higher-ups were willing to make the most special exception.
"Star Wars Rebels" season 3 will start airing on Sept. 24 on Disney XD.
