A familiar face from "Rogue One" will make an appearance on an upcoming episode of Disney XD's hit animated series "Star Wars Rebels" season 3.

According to reports, Forest Whitaker has been tapped to reprise his role of Saw Gerrera on the "Star Wars Rebels: Ghosts of Geonosis, Parts One and Two" episode of the show. The Academy Award-winning actor appeared in "Rogue One" as the rebel freedom fighter, and an animated version of him will soon appear to join the team in "Star Wars Rebels."

The character of Saw Gerrera debuted in the 2008 TV series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" as a guerilla fighter for his home planet of Onderon. Originally created by George Lucas, Saw was trained by Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka Tano. He also served as an early harbinger of the Rebel Alliance, which is a set of disparate groups teaming up to fight for a common goal.

In a press statement, series executive producer Dave Filoni shared his thoughts on the veteran actor's casting. "It's an incredible honor to have Forest Whitaker play Saw in 'Rebels,'" the EP said. "Forest did a great job at capturing Saw in a way that is a bit mad, a bit crazed, a bit afraid, but also a bit sympathetic. He sees something coming, but no one will take action before it's too late," he went on to say.

"Rogue One" recently opened to number one at the box office, scoring a whopping $155 million during its opening weekend. In just four days after its premiere, the total ticket sales crossed the $300 million marker worldwide. Aside from Whitaker, the film also stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Mads Mikkelsen, Donnie Yen, and Alan Tudyk.

The two-part special episode, featuring Whitaker, airs on Saturday, Jan. 7, at 8:30 p.m. ET on Disney XD.
