'Star Wars Rebels' spoilers: creator Dave Filoni to reimagine the 'Rogue One' Scarif Battle from the Ghost's perspective

If there is anything that "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" has done to the current lore canon, that is to connect the pocket holes of the story together in such a way that the different stories feel like one cohesive narrative. The Gareth Edwards film flows seamlessly to the "Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope" with a bridging scene very organic to the story. But more than servicing the original trilogy, it may have also given "Star Wars Rebels" some ideas for future storytelling.

As it turns out, show creator Dave Filoni has plans to reimagine the gritty Battle of Scarif from the perspective of the rebels boarding the Ghost ship that was spotted during the aerial dogfight. However, this does not mean that the squad of Hera, Kanan, Ezra, Sabine and Zeb will all still be present by the time Jyn (Felicity Jones) carries out her suicide mission to steal the plans to the first Death Star.

In a "Rogue One" easter eggs discussion with Entertainment Weekly, Filoni admitted that he already has an inkling of how to do the episode that will offer a new perspective on the Imperial base war. "I already have some theories about the story behind it ... I can imagine doing that entire [Scarif] battle from their point of view, whoever is on the Ghost at that point," he said.

It is important to remember that at this point in "Star Wars: Rebels," the events happening are about one to two years away from the occurrence in "Rogue One." But as early as now, Filoni and his team are already building toward what would be a crossroad for the two properties with the appearance of Saw Gerrera on the upcoming two-part episode. The original rebel, played by Forest Whitaker in the film, has met his end in Jedha but because of the timeline, fans can see a glimpse of what he was before he has built his own troops and stayed at a secluded area in the holy planet.

In a short snippet showing Saw's run in with the Ghost Crew, it appears that the rebel team is having problems containing separatist droids when they descended to Geonosis to find a missing freedom fighter. The Clone Wars veteran emerges and helps them in their campaign although it would be interesting to see up to what extent he is willing to help given his stand on joining the Alliance in "Rogue One."

The episode titled "Ghosts of Geonosis" for "Star Wars Rebels" season 3 is scheduled to air on Jan. 17, 8:30 p.m. ET.
