'Street Fighter 5' updates: Capcom confident game will be popular for 'a long time' despite current poor sales

"Street Fighter 5" has not been doing well in the market as Capcom only shipped 100,000 copies in its second fiscal year, between the month of May and September 2016. Despite this, the developer is not losing confidence in the game.

Speaking to the Japan-based blog Esuteru (as translated by Event Hubs), Capcom CEO Kenzo Tsujimoto mentioned a factor that will help "Street Fighter 5" stay afloat.

"Due to its e-Sports nature, we're hoping that 'Street Fighter 5' can remain popular for a long time," Tsujimoto said of the company's vision for the game.

"Street Fighter 5" appears to be a hit in the United States, Europe and other territories, and Tsujimoto said that Capcom will draw on that as well in their goal to reach more gamers overseas.

Tsujimoto also believes that the PlayStation 4 will help boost the sales, not just for "Street Fighter 5," but also majority, if not all its titles available on the Sony console.

"The PlayStation 4 is a very high-level machine. It's finally reached around 50 million units sold. I believe that by 2020, it might've reached 100 million. Microsoft's hardware could be around 40-50 million by that time as well," he stated.

Gamers have not been happy about "Street Fighter 5," hence the poor sales performance. Eurogamer believes that the fighting game is falling short in attracting casual fans of the title.

The site also believes that the subtle overpricing of some expansions also turns fans off. The disaster of a launch the game had is also believed to have contributed to that.

These concerns gave birth to a call for a "Super" version re-release, which will practically serve as a second chance for Capcom to get "Street Fighter 5" right.

Another way to improve the game is a season 2 downloadable content (DLC), which is reportedly being worked on by Capcom for a 2017 release.
