Musician Rick Springfield is joining "Supernatural" season 12 in the role of Lucifer.

"Supernatural" executive producers Andrew Dabb and Bob Singer announced Springfield's casting during the fantasy/horror drama's Comic-Con panel on Sunday, July 24. The "Supernatural" panel was moderated by Richard Speight, Jr., who has played archangel Gabriel on the show, and Rob Benedict, who plays God.

"Rick Springfield is going to be the new Satan," Speight said during the panel. It was also announced that Springfield will play Lucifer in the first few episodes of the upcoming season.

In season 11, Lucifer inhabited Castiel's (Misha Collins) body. In season 12, he will be taking possession of another, which just so happens to belong to a "washed-up aging rock star."

"Lucifer is going to try out different vessels and the first one he feels comfortable in is a rock star named Vince Vicente," Singer said at Comic-Con. "We have cast that role."

Dabb elaborated on the Lucifer storyline, adding, "Lucifer got what he wanted last season, his face-to-face with God."

"Now he's out in the world," he said. "We see Lucifer on vacation and he wants to have fun. This is a real role. Great actors have played this before like Mark Pellegrino and Misha Collins a little bit, so we needed someone who could act."

The "Supernatural" boss added that not many rock stars are good actors, but that Springfield is "really great."

The musician/actor reportedly shot his first scene for "Supernatural" on Friday.

Before his casting in "Supernatural," Springfield appeared in "True Detective," "High Tide," and "Ricki and the Flash." His most popular acting role to date is that of Dr. Noah Drake on the long-running daytime drama "General Hospital." He first appeared as Dr. Drake in the '80s. He reprised the role from 2005 to 2008 and in 2012.

"Supernatural" season 12 will premiere after "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" on Oct. 13, Thursday at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
