'Supernatural' season 12 spoilers, plot news: Showrunner hints at multiple villains; Misha Collins teases warrior Castiel's return

"Supernatural" season 12 will reportedly feature a slew of villains for the Winchester brothers to fight. Will one of them be the angel Castiel (Misha Collins), Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam's (Jared Padalecki) good friend?

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, "Supernatural" showrunner Andrew Dabb previewed the show's next antagonists, saying, "It's less Sam and Dean having to go up against one enemy and it's more Sam and Dean, especially as the season progresses, feeling they're surrounded by enemies, some of whom may be people they have viewed as allies up until this point."

While neither Dabb nor anyone else from the "Supernatural" cast and crew has confirmed that Castiel is breaking bad in season 12, a previous interview with the "Supernatural" boss may have contained clues to the fan favorite character's future storyline.

Speaking with EW last week, Dabb revealed that the next season of The CW's fantasy horror series will feature Castiel in several stand-alone episodes in a way that he hasn't been featured in years.

Dabb singled out the upcoming season's 12th episode as a key one for Castiel, saying, "That's very heavily about Castiel and the journey he's been on, some things from his past that we're not aware of are being brought to light."

"I'd kind of like to see him go back to being the badass warrior Cas from season 4 for a little bit, and revisit that aspect of his character," Collins told Zap2It at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.

Based on Dabb's and Collins' comments, it appears that a more dangerous version of Castiel will be revealed in "Supernatural" season 12. The show could also delve into the character's backstory, possibly revealing things that will stun viewers of the show.

Will Castiel emerge as a villain in season 12?

"Supernatural" season 12 premieres on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
