'Supernatural' updates: Season 12 could be the series' last; Is there a possible spinoff?

"Supernatural," one of The CW's longest-running shows, has witnessed many changes all through its 11 seasons on air, the latest of which being the instatement of new showrunners, Robert Singer and Andrew Dabb. Now as its season 11 closes and season 12 lies closely ahead, there are two major questions hovering over the fantasy series — whether or not season 12 will be its last and whether or not there will be a "Supernatural" spinoff for fans to look forward to.

Movie Pilot cites events in and facts about "Supernatural" which point to the argument that season 12 will be the show's final installment.

The repercussions of the penultimate episode of season 11, titled "We Happy Few," have left viewers wondering how the story will take off in the next season. Sam and Dean Winchester have found themselves planted in a very dangerous turf. In the episode, the huge fight ensued. Amara made it to the next encounters alive and strong. Despite the heavy attacks by some Crowley-led demons and a wound in the stomach inflicted by Lucifer, she managed to survive again after tapping Rowena and the witches for help. Chuck who watched Amara get stabbed suddenly became more lenient and less vigilant for an interval of time which gave Amara an opportunity to respond to their attacks, eventually delivering a fatal blow to Lucifer.

It appeared, although not guaranteed, that Lucifer the Devil was just killed. Amara is back with so much strength and power. The Winchesters are fighting the biggest battle in the "Supernatural" world in order to save the world and in the name of innocent lives and humanity.

Based on where the storyline has left off and is to pick up next season, season 12 might be the last for "Supernatural." In addition to this, Jeremy Carver has handed over his showrunner job to Singer and Dabb as he moves on to another The CW show. Under the supervision of the new series executives, all aspects of the story seem to be coming into where they should be in the bigger picture — that is, the ultimate chapter of the battle against evil. And defeating evil will come at a price, maybe in exchange of a life of an endeared character.

Moreover, the lead stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles have spent 11 years playing their respective characters and may be considering to move on to less familiar challenges in their careers.

Meanwhile, The CW is not closing its doors on a possible spinoff for "Supernatural" as reported by Fansided, and fans seem to not lose hope either. In the event of a positive outcome of a spinoff, it is expected to be successful because of an already bolstered fan base.

"Supernatural" season 11 ends on Wednesday, May 25. The series will return for season 12 later this year.
