Daphne (Katie Leclerc) and Bay (Vanessa Marano) return home from China after receiving an urgent call on the upcoming premiere of "Switched at Birth" season 5.

Titled "The Call," the groundbreaking drama's first episode for season 5 picks up with the lead characters coming back after their transformative 10-month trip to China. Upon arriving in Kansas City, Daphne tries to integrate herself back into campus life, but she soon realizes that a lot of things have changed since she left. Meanwhile, Bay has mixed feelings towards Emmett (Sean Berdy), who is dealing with his own issues, while Regina (Constance Marie) feels guilty because of a secret tryst.

Over the past five seasons of the Freeform series, fans have grown up with Bay and Daphne Kennish-Vasquez — from discovering they went home with the wrong biological families when they were born, to dating each other's best friends. Viewers also witnessed the duo's rebellious stage and how they coped with the death of their beloved father, Angelo (Gilles Marini).

Speaking with TV Guide, series creator Lizzy Weiss teased how the girls have changed this season. She also shared some storylines that fans should look forward to as the series gets close to its conclusion. While she is interested to see how fans react to the campus racism story and milestone 100th episode, Weiss hinted that she is the most excited for the finale.

"We always come back to diversity and the different types of diversity in this family. I'm excited to see the series finale, of course," Weiss said. "It's going to be a lot of tears, but I am excited for everyone, especially for fans that have been there for five years to sort of sit down with some Kleenex and say goodbye. There's stuff all throughout that I think everyone is going to be excited about," the series creator added.

The fifth season of "Switched at Birth" premieres on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 9 p.m. ET on Freeform.
