For its fifth and final season, "Switched at Birth" will tackle, among others, campus racism. The characters that will be embroiled in the issue will be Daphne (Katie Leclerc) and Mingo (Adam Hagenbuch).

In "Switched at Birth" season 5, the couple will draw the ire of their black classmates when Mingo dresses up as rapper Lil Wayne, which offends the African-American students.

The trailer for "Switched at Birth" season 5 teases that they will go viral in social media for Mingo's offensive getup at the costume party.

Many hate messages and comments are being thrown at them. "People hate us," Daphne tells her boyfriend in the clip as she fights her tears.

One of the responses read "Black appropriation at its worst. That's my culture he's laughing at." Another read "Just another example of the microaggressions that black students feel every day on this campus."

Other comments as seen in the "Switched at Birth" season 5 clip appear to be okay with it saying "he looks good" while another said people are just looking for something to complain about.

"Switched at Birth" is known and commended for putting the spotlight on real-life societal issues and this is just one of the latest they will feature on the show.

In handling this "Switched at Birth" season 5 storyline, executive producer Lizzy Weiss told Fox News, "We are really trying to be accurate and honest about both sides of the debate."

In this story, Mingo will argue that he was only celebrating his favorite rapper and that he was in no way mocking him and blacks.

"That's the point in the story where we realized we needed to shift perspective entirely and let our black characters lead their own story... We see the entire episode from their points of view," Weiss teased.

Talking more about the issue of campus racism, Weiss said that black students are forced to go through "everything from micro-aggressions, as they're called, small things on a daily basis that students of color experience and usually swallow...to larger acts that are impossible to swallow, and which galvanize them."

This will be put on spotlight come "Switched at Birth" season 5 when it premieres Tuesday, Jan. 24 on Freeform.
