'The Americans' season 5 release date, spoilers: Upcoming season to focus on other characters?
"The Americans" season 5 will set the stage for the conclusion of the series, which according to reports will be ending after season 6. According to Joseph Weisberg and Joel Fields, the show's executive producers, the season ahead will present interesting arcs for several characters.
"It's hard to believe we're heading into the final stretch on The Americans, and we're so grateful to know we'll be telling the story to its conclusion," Fields and Weisberg told Deadline back in May. "It's a lot of people putting their hearts and souls into 'The Americans,' at this point for a lot of years. We're looking forward to the final two."
A time jump from the season 4 finale to the season 5 premiere might reveal where the Jennings will be, whether they decided to stay in America or go back to Russia. It will be recalled that the FBI captured their asset William (Dylan Baker), who didn't tell on the couple even under duress.
In addition, Weisberg and Fields said during last August's Television Critics Association press tour that "The Americans" season 5 will focus more on the storyline of ex-FBI secretary Martha (Alison Wright). It will be discovered that Martha isn't really dead. Season 5 will explore what she has been up to and why she has been missing in action.
Phillip and Elizabeth Jennings' (played by Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell, respectively) son Henry (Keidrich Sellati) has just learned what his parents truly are. So season 5 will give more focus on him, particularly how he handles the truth about his parents' secret responsibilities.
Meanwhile, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rhys dished on what could possibly happen in "The Americans" season 5, saying the angle of the Jennings couple living next to an FBI agent was actually based on real life.
"These spies were called 'illegals,' and so we had a real illegal come to set who did exactly what we did. We caught some flack in the press about having an FBI agent living next door, but that was his story. He had an FBI agent who lived next door to him who turned him, so I was saying all this to Joe and Joel. I was like, 'This is perfect. [Stan Beeman] will turn us— we'll become double agents.'"
Did Rhys just hint that the Jennings couple will become double agents in the upcoming installment? That remains to be seen.
There is no official word yet when "The Americans" season 5 will be released, but it is expected to come out sometime in early 2017.
