Little is known of the upcoming fifth season of "The Americans," the Cold War drama starring Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as Americanized Soviet spies. Fans know that it's coming back on the FX network in 2017 and that there will be a time jump between season 4's finale and season 5's premiere, but nothing much has been said about the plot, until the recent Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour.

To recap season 4, the FBI captured William (Dylan Baker), the asset of Elizabeth (Russell) and Phillip Jennings (Rhys). William didn't reveal the couple's identities even under duress, but the season finale saw the Jennings' undecided whether to stay in America or go back to Russia.

According to executive producers Joseph Weisberg and Joel Fields, suspicions will mount between the Jennings and their neighbor Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich), who works for the FBI, in the upcoming season. Fields said things will get more suspicious "in an unexpected way."

Deadline was there during the TCA, and according to the publication, "The Americans" season 5 will see the Jennings' son, Henry (Keidrich Sellati), becoming more involved in the story. Viewers of the series know that as the youngest child, Henry has been kept in the dark regarding the spy affairs of his parents.

Weisberg also hinted that the [Soviet] recruitment of Paige Jenning (Holly Taylor) "will finally come to a boil," and Gabriel (Frank Langella), one of the Jennings' Soviet handlers, will offer good reports about how Phillip's second wife, former FBI secretary Martha Hanson (Alison Wright), is doing.

Incidentally, season 5 is the penultimate installment of the series, and it will be composed of 13 episodes. The sixth and final season will have 10 episodes and will premiere in spring of 2018. Collider asked the showrunners how and when they decided that two more seasons would be enough to tell the story of "The Americans."

According to Fields, it was John Landgraf, FX Network president and general manager, who came up to them midway through the fourth season and told them he was putting the fate of the show on their hands – how it will end and how much time they will take to end the show. Weisberg said they're looking at seasons 5 and 6 as the end game while taking it one season at a time.

"By figuring them out together, we're able to figure out how to make it the end game, but next season [season 5] really is a stand-alone season," he told Collider. "We could just do next season without thinking too much about the final season, but it does start to lay the emotional and plot groundwork for the final season."

"The Americans" returns for season 5 on FX in 2017.
